One of the traditional hymns says to “praise the Lord with the sound of Music”, and artist Margaret Whisselle does just that. An accomplished singer, musician and teacher, Margaret has assumed the duties of organist and choirmaster at Lakeshore Drive United Church. She began playing at the church in July, 2015.
Whisselle, a former Seaway District High School graduate, has professionally studied voice and piano for many years: she is also a trained opera singer, singing with the society in Brockville. She teaches a number of local students in vocal and piano skills, and also serves as the accompanist for the Seaway Valley Singers.
In her new job, she has been “experimenting with hymn arrangements, with different rhythms and different sounds, both modern and traditional. This congregation particularly loves old Gospel, and people will often start to sing along when she play certain hymns during the collection and the postlude.
Whisselle describe the acoustics in the church as outstanding. She actually attended this church when she was a little girl, coming to Sunday School. So, in some ways, to be here playing the organ, is to have come full circle.
In the United Church of Canada, music is an integral part of worship. The members of the choir of Lakeshore Drive are an important part of our Christian faith community. They dedicate many hours to choral practice to provide musical leadership and inspiration during our worship services.
